Scratch Helicopter Tutorials

Welcome to our Scratch Helicopter Animation. Click the top right hand corner green flag to start. (Make sure computer sound is on, so you can hear sounds).

Then use the keyboard arrow keys on your computer to fly the helicopter through the city.

Use the top right hand corner red stop sign to stop the animation.

This post contains a series of four tutorials that will result in the final Helicopter animation.

    These are as follows:
    • Tutorial 1 - Move With Arrow Keys
    • Tutorial 2 - Move with Costume Change
    • Tutorial 3 - Adding Sounds
    • Tutorial 4 - Making Backgrounds

Let's get started with the first tutorial.

Part 1 - Move With Arrow Keys

The finished animation for Part 1 is this one.
Click the green flag and use keyboard arrow keys to move.

The following YouTube tutorial shows the steps required to build the "Helicopter 1" animation.

Note that by adjusting the bottom right hand controls, it can be viewed full screen in HD. (Press Escape to return to this blog page when finished).

Here is the final Scratch Script code for Part 1.

Part 2 - Move With Costume Change

Here is the finished animation for Part 2.
Click the green flag and use keyboard arrow keys to move.

In this tutorial we build a sprite costume for the helicopter to fly to the left. We then use costume change script to change to the left Helicopter every time the left arrow is pressed.

The following YouTube tutorial shows the steps required to build the "Helicopter 2" animation.

Note that by adjusting the bottom right hand controls, it can be viewed full screen in HD. (Press Escape to return to this blog page when finished).

Here is the final Scratch Scripting for Part 2.

And these are the costumes we set up for the Helicopter Sprite.

Part 3 - Add Sound Effects

In Part 3 we use Scratch sound to make a helicopter sound for our animation. Unfortunately the sound plays a little bit slow due to internet delay on our blog post page here, and sounded a lot better coming straight from Scratch.

The following YouTube tutorial shows the steps required to build the "Helicopter 3" animation.

Note that by adjusting the bottom right hand controls, it can be viewed full screen in HD. (Press Escape to return to this blog page when finished).

The following will need to be added into the Part 2 project, to give it some helicopter sound.

    Part 4 - Making Backgrounds

In this final tutorial we make a nice night sky background for our animation.
This is in fact the animation shown at the start of this blog post.

The following YouTube tutorial shows the steps required to build the "Helicopter 4" animation.

Note that by adjusting the bottom right hand controls, it can be viewed full screen in HD. (Press Escape to return to this blog page when finished).

The final full script code for the Helicopter Animation is shown below.
