MAKE UP FOR EVER: New Aqua Liners

The other day I mentioned that bright eyeliners were one of THE trends for summer. MAKE UP FOR EVER just launched a full line of Aqua Liners, waterproof liners full of color and sparkle that are guaranteed to make your eyes pop.




They are available in 16 colors, ranging from silvery-white to pink to liquid gunmetal and everything in between. I was able to check out Diamond Gold, Iridescent Blue Lagoon and Iridescent Fuchsia before they hit the shelves at my Sephora.







Diamond Gold is a lighter color that is best suited for someone with tan or darker skin. This color is gorgeous, and only gets prettier the darker the skin tone. On me, it tends to become a more like an eye highlighter. It can give a really "natural with a bit of oomph" look to my fairer skinned friends.

Iridescent Fuchsia is honestly a color I don't know how to use. I would imagine that some people can pull off this really pretty pink, but I'm not one of them. It would look really cool if you double-lined your lid, once with black and once with this, using this color to exaggerate the line. (I can't do this on myself because I can't see out of one of my eyes without my glasses. I still need those breakaway glasses or a monocle to fix this problem.)

Iridescent Blue Lagoon is gorgeous. I wouldn't have thought that a bright green would make my blue eyes sing the way it does. It has a little bit of sparkle to it that just works. This is such a pretty color, I can't stop wearing it.






(I have no idea why my one eyebrow is raised. I didn't know I could do that. This is 6 hours after I applied the liner originally. My makeup looks just like it did when I put it on this morning.)

The best part is that these colors don't come off until you take them off. And that's easy with a little makeup remover, water and a wash cloth, with no scrubbing involved. Perfect!

Beauty Shorts: Bright Eyes & Foam Color

Quick, Pretty & Bright

From where I sit, the next big trend for eyes is all about a pop of color surrounded by gorgeously faux tanned skin. My favorite way to wear a bright color on the lids is to use one of the newly released brightly colored liners. Both Stila and Make Up For Ever have gorgeous, long-wearing, liquid shades you need to check out!

I like to start with a light shadow color all over the eye, like Ice from BE. Then I tightline my upper lash line with a waterproof black liner, like Stingray from Stila. Next, on the upper lid, I add a line of bright color that flicks up at the outer edge of my eye to give a playful appearance. It takes two seconds to do and looks beautiful! Plus, these new formulas won't budge. Or so I assume. I've tried the Stila in the store (and they were totally un-smudgeable) and will get right back to you on the new Make Up For Ever colors as soon as I can get my hands on them.

Nice 'N Easy Color Blend Foam Hair Color vs. John Frieda Precision Foam Color?

I've used the SAMY Fat Foam and had really nice results; although I wasn't in love with the color (the color I get from my stylist is so much prettier and vibrant). But, as my pennies get fewer and fewer, I'm considering trying this whole foaming hair color trend again, as it's so much easier to apply versus traditional hair color. It's one of the reasons I scrimp and save to have someone else color my hair. I have so much of it, coloring my own hair is no longer fun for me. Nice 'N Easy appear to have three reds currently on the market. John Frieda appears to have four. I suppose my color would be Reddish Brown - hmmph - that doesn't sound like much fun. Have any of my redheaded sisters tried this? Yeah or Neah? If you've tried it, please let me know!

MAKE UP FOR EVER: Uplight Face Luminizer Gel

 
Looking for a way to add radiance and luminosity to your face and break out of the all-over-the-place weather doldrums? Make Up For Ever recently launched a collection of luminizing gels called Uplight. These gorgeous colors are available in  eight shades, which range from the innocent-looking #11, a dewy pink beige, to the #33, a feisty sparkling copper.





All shades can be played up or down, to suit your look. Add it to your cheek bones for a fresh face, in the arch of your brow to make your peepers pop, or add a touch of Uplight to your tinted moisturizer to perk up your entire face. The possibilities are endless.


 

I was able to check out #23, a golden pearl color. Lightly layered over blush, it gives a slight radiance to your face. Applied with a heavier touch, it can give you that JLo glow. I also used it on its own to give me a subtly defined cheek.




These are available at Sephora and retail for $29 each. The one tiny drawback? Uplights come in the same kind of dispenser as the (amazing) HD Microfinish blushes do. It takes a lot of practice to not dispense more than you need for one application. However, that didn't stop me from buying several cheek colors and probably wouldn't stop my from picking up a few other Uplight colors (like #s 11,21 and 32). What colors do you have your eye on?

MAKE UP FOR EVER: HD Not Retouched

Between Kimora's super long legs, the ridiculous thinning of models and fattening of lashes, beauty advertising has gone crazy with photoshop. While I personally WANT to be that pretty/thin/flawless/perfect/poreless, it isn't attainable. It has to, over time, mess with our collective sense of self, in one way or another, right?




MAKE UP FOR EVER has recently launched their first campaign that includes no digital retouching what-so-ever. I love the honesty. I'm not sure not being HD ready is the reason that retouching exists in the first place, but either way, I dig it. And I think the model looks amazing.

New from Make Up For Ever: Lab Shine Lip Gloss

Make Up For Ever just released 35 shiny new lip glosses, Lab Shine, on the shelves at Sephora. Created with three different formulas, all colors provide long-wearing shine, hyaluronic acid to hydrate your pucker and a non-sticky texture with a slight apricot scent.

The Diamond Collection gives lips a shimmery finish with colors that are on the natural, sheer side.


Most colors are on the pinky/purple, healthy flush side, along with a few beautiful peachy-tangerine tones.

I love these colors to help get you through the next few months of cold weather. I dig the industrial-ness of the looks this particular collection can inspire.

After wearing these colors for a bit, I am happy to report they are not sticky at all and wear for a decent amount of time, as I have come to expect from Make Up For Ever. I barely noticed the apricot smell, which worried me a bit before trying them out. I definitely suggest testing a few of these on your next visit to Sephora or explore them at Sephora.com.

Two Beauty Bloggers Enter a Mall...and Find the New "Red" for Redheads

Anne Houseman of Beauty Xpose and I went shopping two weekends ago. Our mission? To to find Anne a new foundation, find me a longer fall coat and check out some lip color for fall. We successfully completed our mission and found a few great things along the way.

Anne covered her search for foundation here. Check it out to see what worked for her. For me? I settled on two winter foundations. Bobbi Brown Luminizing Foundation and Dior Airflash. I am not 100% happy with either, so I am up for suggestions!

Then it was off to find me a Fall/Winter Coat that wasn't too heavy or too light, that came past my tuckus and was under $100. We hit the sales at Macy's and found bupkis. I'm still giggling at the fact that I said, with disgust, "I'm not finding anything. I'm too buxom." (I totally am.) But what Anne heard was, "I'm not finding anything. I'm too awesome." I guess it proves the point that if two bloggers are staring at the same thing, chances are opinions will differ. :-) Either way, Macy's was a bust. (Insert rim shot, please.)

Later that day, we made it to Burlington Coat Factory, which is where the world stores its coats for awesome/buxom ladies. After pointing out to Anne the things I avoid in coats (No fake fur, could be dog. No leather after watching an aerial hunting video. Bright colors scare me. Same with patterns. "I'm quirky" was the polite way Anne put it, I believe), we were off, looking for a dark coat made of something wool-like. After combing the racks of coats that fit my exact description, we found a Dereon coat that looked amazing.

While I am not one to jump on celebrity clothing lines (this one is Beyonce's), this coat looked amazing, came with a belt a mile long and was $89.99. Sold! (A serious bargain shopper would score this on Overstock for under $70, but I was happy to find something that looked like it was made for my figure!)

Back to makeup. The other goal of mine that day was to find a new fall lip color. It's hard for me to find something "different" from what I have. If you included all of the old MAC colors that I took out of plastics and put in palettes, I have hundreds of them.

We were at MAC looking at the new long-wearing foundation (fail!) and Anne found a really bright color I would never have picked up. Knowing my love of all things peach, Anne selected Crosswires, a color that she saw as peachy, which I saw as weird old lady too pink/coral.

Always up for a laugh, I tried it on, assuming she was crazy-pants. Then people passing by started complimenting me.


Next, the makeup artist added Passing Fancy, one of the Dazzleglass Cremes in the holiday A Tartan Tale collection. Then she and Anne stood back, sizing me up.

"It's the new red for red heads.", Anne said.

"What? This color? Really? It's so loud." I said, looking in the small hand mirror.

"Will you trust me? It's perfect," she replied.

And my new favorite fall lip color was born. When I looked it other light, in better mirrors, it really was a whole new red for red heads. I'm not sure too many people can carry off this color. But fair-skinned red heads should check this out, stat, before the limited edition lip gloss is gone.

Finding the Perfect Foundation: Two Bloggers on a Mission

Anne and I got together last weekend to hang out and go shopping. Needless to say, goofiness, makeup, and giggles ensued. I'm working on my side of things to share with you later in the week. In the meantime, here's what Anne had to say about our search for the perfect foundation.


Last weekend, I had the long-awaited pleasure of reconnecting with my good pal and brilliant beauty blogger, Kelly Gould (of Gouldylox Reviews). And believe me — just getting together was a feat in and of itself.

While we only live an hour and a half away from each other, it’s been a struggle matching up our schedules. The last time we were supposed to get together, my immune system flipped me the bird and cackled to herself because I had even thought about going out and having fun. But Sunday, the evil phlegm-thrower backed down and let me leave my house for the first time in a week (no joke) so I could spend my hard earned cash on makeup and jewelry.

So shop-til-you-drop time! Our mission was two-fold: Find a new foundation for each of us, and score a stylish fall jacket for Kelly. And of course, if there were other great deals to be had — even better.

On our quest, I learned quite a few things:

Even some of the newest foundations from expensive brands really suck.

I have a severe color identification deficit disorder.

Kelly is a supreme color master.

Wearing certain makeup colors during certain months only is not normal (Note: in my head, purple/pinks are for Jan. and Feb.).

My facial fuzz is overgrown and needs to be weed-wacked before more foundation gets stuck to it, enhancing my wooly-bear syndrome in front of unsuspecting Sephora employees.

Despite having an amazing camera in my Droid X, I forget to take pictures.

Upon beginning our foundation-finding foray, we set out to find a color that would better match my lightening skin (and yes, I used SPF all summer!). I had been using Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme ($36.50), and I absolutely loved it, but as the intrepid beauty blogger you’ve all come to know and love, I couldn’t pass up trying out two much-hyped foundations: Lancome Teint Miracle ($37) and MAKE UP FOR EVER (MUFE) HD Invisible Cover Foundation ($40). Kelly, on the other hand, was determined to find a foundation at MAC that was a better match than the too-dark color she had been coaxed into purchasing by a well-meaning, but colorblind, sales rep.

Our first stop: the makeup mecca (Sephora). Since Kelly is a regular at the store to the point where she is Facebook friends with staff members, we were treated like royalty the moment we stepped inside. It was fantastically ridiculous, and I know what Lady Gaga must feel like (I love you all, my little makeup monsters!). Ahem. Inflated ego aside, when we explained my makeup mission, the helpful Sephora staff immediately ran into motion and challenged my face to a Foundation-Off.

In the left corner, we had Lancome Teint Miracle:



And in the right, we had MUFE HD.



Both were applied to my face (one on each half), which was primed with the MUFE HD Microperfecting Primer in green to minimize any redness. It’s so funny how you can immediately tell the difference between foundations after a side-by-side comparison. You know what else is funny? Not taking pics. I’m a dope.

Both colors the Sephora team selected blended in as if they were one with my skin (very Zen). However, it was immediately apparent that the MUFE HD was a heavier coverage and dried down to a more matte finish instantly. The Lancome side was a medium coverage, though it didn’t seem to be as “cakey” heavy, so it was deemed the winner of the round, as I prefer a more natural looking finish. But did it win out overall? Unfortunately, no.

After determining the Lancome was our better bet, we removed the MUFE and applied the Lancome to the entire face, lest I look like I have a cakey, dry skin disorder on only one half of my face. Then, I decided to continue shopping while wearing it to see how it held up after time. Unfortunately, before we even left the store, I saw that it was already settling right into my forehead lines, and my dry skin was starting to look “chalky,” as Kelly so eloquently put it. Ten minutes later and the foundation was clinging to every possible dry flake (oh and my fuzzy facial hair) to the point that it looked like my skin was begging for a drink of water.

As you can imagine, this is not the look I’m going for.

So you know the old adage, if it ain’t broke…? Time for me to heed that advice and return to the Estee Lauder counter to pick up the right shade of their foundation, which I love to bits and pieces for its medium coverage, smmmooooth application and natural finish (I swear it’s the hyaluronic acid that makes it stand shoulders above others).

As for Kelly? Well, she wasn’t finding much luck in the MAC department (”chalky” seemed to be the problem of the day), so she decided to test out the Estee Lauder herself and left with a 10-day sample supply. I’m hoping she comments here so we can find out how she feels about it!

Alas, I’ll spare you the remaining details of our adventure, though it included a search for similar colors of purple lip gloss (colorblind fail) and an attempt to figure out why a trench coat’s belt seemed 30 times too long (trend recognition fail). Notes, Ponderings and Blather

If you didn't know this about me already, my paid job (what I do when I am not testing stuff or do-gooding with dogs) is a television commercial producer. I am on a tricky job at the moment with almost no time to write. That doesn't stop me from thinking about things I want to tell you. I just don't have the time to flush them out.


1. I am watching the second season of Bones right now, where everyone with lady parts wears the exact same shade of lip color at all times. (Except when Bones goes to the casino and Angel has to fight in the underground fight club.) I like the extreme natural peach of the color quite a bit. I think you can recreate that with Make Up For Ever's 1C lip liner and NARS Love Devotion lip stick. It's pretty darn close, on me, anyways. Now you can live like it's 2006, too.

3. Combining Stila's One Step Makeup and Fresh's Twilight make the most beautiful shade of foundation. It's luminous, without being greasy. Seriously, it's bea-you-ti-ful. Just don't add too much Fresh or it thins out the coverage.

4. Does the InStyler work? Does it get tangled? Do I need one? I am leaning towards trying it. But, like the clipless curling iron I had to have 2 weeks ago, I fear my hair isn't quite long enough yet. Thoughts?

5. Some people should stop trying to be famous. Case in point, here. I said it before and I say it again, C&C Music Factory wants their dancers back.

6. Kerastase Masque Nutri-Thermique is seriously being a life saver. My hair is dried out and it is making the ends stop looking so crinkly. Thanks, Kerastase!

I subscribe to Allure and bought People at the checkout (unusual for me). I bought the Fresh, NARS and the Make Up For Ever. Stila and Kerastase were sent to me for review. I haven't tried the InStyler, hence the question, and I pay for cable, where I sometimes watch RHOWherever. This concludes my FCC statement.

Make Up For Ever New Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick

Paul and Joe Protective Foundation Primer trumped Cover FX's Brite Prep, which is another win in the column of the non-silicone primers. I love Cover FX and its bearberry to help tone melasma, but Paul and Joe performed better when it came to keeping makeup on all day.

Mally Beauty Perfect Prep and Josie Maran Argan Oil Primer both scored a 9.5 from me in terms of stick-to-itive-ness. Both primers held up equally well in the humid Baltimore summer weather. If I had to choose, I would say Mally inched out Josie Maran, but by less than an inch. I need your help to determine the winner! My Beauty Nook: Makeup Storage Madness

Even if I never buy another shred or speck of makeup, I have enough to last a lifetime as of right now. Technically, I could run out of foundation, but I think I could go for at least several years before it became a problem. However, we all know I am not likely to stop purchasing makeup anytime soon. The biggest problem makeup mavens have is storage. How do you keep everything organized, easy to find and accessible? It's not easy, that's for sure! So since so many of you asked, here is how I keep my treasures organized.

I keep all of my makeup and skin care in my beauty nook. My nook is like a cockpit. It's about 3.5 feet wide by 5 feet long. It's not big. And half of it has one of those slanted bungalow ceilings that happens when you're outside of the dormer. So it is less than ideal.

I've tried multiple plastic storage containers, making my own paper dividers for mineral shadows, a tiered dessert tray and combinations of all of the above. After searching for five years for a solution that worked and could continue to grow with my collection, I think I have it figured out. While it doesn't look organized and perfect, believe me when I tell you it is pretty darn close. The storage bins I found this weekend are perfect!


This is the cockpit view of where I sit. On my small table, I keep things I reach for every morning. Relaxing Fluid for my hair, sunscreen, whatever essential skin care I am using right now, some brushes, a heat-resistant mat, some new products and my MUFE cream blushes. And yes, there are 6 lights, four of which are sunlight bulbs to give me a cool , even tone. (An art director I work with suggested getting those specialty bulbs to improve my lighting situation.)

Hanging safely on the wall are my flat iron and 3 barrel curling iron and my dryer (not seen). The four drawer white plastic bin (Target) holds older makeup I am not likely to use; old MAC eye shadows, Trish McEvoy collections and tons of drugstore makeup and bobby pins. I have zillions of bobby pins, no doubt left over from my faux hair obsession of the early 00's.

Above that are green and white bins (Target) that hold older, large skin care products, color palettes and about 100 lip sticks and glosses. On top of that is a lazy susan (Target) with several glass vases--filled partially with rocks (AC Moore)--that hold the brushes I am currently using, but not using everyday.

Also, worth noting on the lazy susan is Travelin' Sam, the hand-carved statue inspired by Buddha, that traveled across the globe with my father when he worked for the military and Western Electric. I believe a tour guide gave this to my Dad to bring him good luck when he was working in East Asia. Sam is missing a few toes, but still watches over me.


(Note the mosaic next to the mirror. My superpal Xina gave me that as a pre-wedding present. Here is what it looked like before I hung it in the bathroom and moisture cracked it. It is still one of my most favorite possessions.)


Next is my Lowe's Machinist Chest, which is strictly for mineral makeup and single pan eye shadows that I use often. This amazing chest can usually be picked up around the holidays from Lowe's, but you have to score one the day after Thanksgiving, as each store only gets a few. I keep brushes, some hair stuff, deodorant, makeup wipes and perfume in the top section. If you are curious, for now, the chest is sitting on the stand part of a cheap wood and glass accent table from Joanne Fabrics.

The gray set of drawers is the best thing ever. It's sturdy, has FIFTEEN drawers, wheels and looks decent. I picked it up at my local Office Depot, despite the fact the website says it is for delivery only. There is also a smaller version, with half of the space.


These drawers hold everything from nail polish, all of my BE Lip stuff (that drawer is overflowing!), liquid foundations, primers, mascaras, blushes, cream liners, extra brushes, larger hair care and skin care items, eye shadow sample baggies and to-be-reviewed items.

Finally, on top is a cloth basket containing oversize hair and skin care items and a few to-be-reviewed items. Not shown is the four drawer plastic bin in the closet. This is Loxy's favorite set of drawers, as he kindly cleaned up a portion of his already non-existent closet space so I could put it in there. Those bins hold press releases, sample sizes, reader prizes and hair and skin care products to be given away.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Creams + Swatches

Make Up For Ever recently launched Aqua Creams, long lasting, water proof creams that can be used on the eye, cheek and lips. These are currently only at Sephora and come in 21 shades.

You know I am a tough critic when it comes to cream products, so I was very curious to see how these hold up. Based on all of my other experiences with MUFE, I would have to assume these are holy grail quality. You should know that not all colors are suitable for use on eyes, cheeks and lips, so make sure the color you pick up is approved for where you want to use it*.

I picked up #17, a gorgeous eggplant color for eyes and cheeks. It can be blended out to be really sheer or applied in layers for a deeper, darker look. After 6 hours of wear, there is no sign of fading or creasing whatsoever.

A women who was also checking out the new MUFE Aqua Creams put #7 on her lips and followed up with a clear gloss. She said she had been wearing it for over 2 hours while working and shopping and had no signs of fading or feathering, which is amazing for such a bright color!
